Which fat bike suits you: step-through, wheel size and type
Not every fat bike is the same. The 20 inch fat bike is the best-selling group, with models such as the OUXI V8, C80, ENGWE M20 and the V20 from QM Wheels. If it needs to fit in a hallway or car boot, look at a mini fat bike with 16 inch wheels. If you often carry someone on the back, look at longtails. There are skinny bikes too: the same look, narrower tyres, slightly lighter steering. A step-through frame is handy if you get on and off a lot, a high frame feels sportier. The specifications of each bike show which body height it suits. Lines such as Pro, Limited or Cross add a second battery, suspension or a more luxurious finish. Looking for a 26 inch fat bike for a taller rider? Then look at the ENGWE E26.
Fat bike brands you will find here
ENGWE is the largest line on this page, with the E26, L20, M20 and Mapfour. OUXI follows with the V8 series, C80 and GT-20. Then the V20 models from QM Wheels, a popular entry-level choice with complete equipment. KNAAP Bikes, STOER Bikes, Phatfour and Ruff Cycles cost more to buy. Diablo, AGM, ApeRyder and 7GO are the sharper-priced entry models, and JOBOBIKE, Tomos and Grandeux complete the range. Which brand suits you depends on how much you ride and how important nearby service is. If in doubt, compare battery size, motor position and warranty period.
What determines the price of a fat bike
The price difference between two fat bikes is almost always in the battery, the motor and the brand. A larger or dual battery gives more range, from around 50 km with small batteries to 120 km or more. A mid-drive motor with a torque sensor feels more natural than a rear hub motor, but costs more. Hydraulic disc brakes and rear suspension also add to the price. You can pay in one go or spread the cost with Klarna, in3 or SprayPay. So what a fat bike costs depends on what you use it for. For school or work on flat roads a single battery is plenty, for long rides or a passenger on the back a dual battery pays off. Read more about prices in what does a fat bike cost.
Is a fat bike legal in the Netherlands?
Yes, as long as it meets the rules for an electric bicycle. According to the Dutch government, the motor may have at most 250 watts, the assistance stops at 25 km/h and a throttle is only allowed as a walk assist up to 6 km/h. Then you do not need a licence, number plate or insurance, and there is no helmet requirement. Note that heavier models such as the OUXI GT-2000 have more power and are only meant for private land, not public roads. The product page states what applies per model.
