Buying a longtail bike: an e-bike with an extra long rear rack

Two children to school and then the shopping, without a car. That is what a longtail is made for. The frame continues well behind the saddle, so it carries a long rear rack with room for one or two seats, panniers or a crate. There is no box at the front, so you steer as on a normal bike and the load sits behind you. Torn between a cargo bike and a longtail? On a cargo bike the children sit in the box in front of you, where you can see them. A longtail is narrower and rides more like a normal bike. Every longtail on this page has a 250 watt motor. With a full rack, that help when pulling away, on bridges and in headwind is no luxury.

How much weight can a longtail carry?

That differs per model, and it is listed in the specifications of each bike. A few examples from our range. The OUXI Q10 has a maximum load of 150 kg and a rear rack 18 cm longer than normal, with side guards and room for two child seats. The Vogue Wonder goes up to 180 kg, rides on 24 inch wheels and fits all common child seats. The JOBOBIKE Transer carries 200 kg, has a low step-through and a double battery for rides of more than 120 km. When choosing, add everything up: yourself, the children, the seats and what is in the bags. If you are close to the maximum, pick a model with more margin.

Will children ride on the back? Then check three things. Does the seat you want to use fit the rear rack? Are there side guards or footrests, so small feet stay away from the wheel? And how stable is the bike on its stand while you put the children on? The V20 XR3 Special Longtail is made for two small children and has hydraulic brakes and suspension. Longtail or midtail: which length suits you?

Not everyone needs a long rear. A midtail is a little shorter than a longtail. You still get a sturdy rear rack, but the bike takes up less space in the hallway or shed. Carlos offers the Compact and the Midtail, each as Basic and Full. The MONKEYBIKE MonkeyTail comes in a range of colours. If you mostly ride alone with shopping or one child, a shorter model is often enough. If two children regularly come along, look at a real longtail with more load capacity.
