The JOBOBIKE Astra is JOBOBIKE's city bike with an automatic brake light, something rarely seen on bicycles. As soon as you brake, the rear light shines brighter, allowing riders behind you to see that you are slowing down. It also comes with a 540 watt-hour battery, eight gears, hydraulic disc brakes, and a MIK luggage carrier. The 27.5-inch wheels feature a low step-through on a 41-centimeter frame.

Automatic brake light

In cars, a brake light is a given; on bicycles, it is not. The Astra has one: the rear light shines brighter as soon as you brake. In heavy traffic, darkness, or rain, this gives riders behind you an extra half-second of reaction time—and that is precisely the difference that matters in a rear-end collision. It works automatically using the main battery, so you do not need to switch it on or off. The lights are permanently mounted on the bike and run on the main battery. When the bike is delivered, briefly check the brake lever reach; you can adjust it in a few seconds.

Range of the JOBOBIKE Astra

The battery is rated at 36V and 15 ampere-hours, totaling 540 watt-hours, with a claimed range of up to 150 kilometers. That figure is optimistic for this capacity: it applies to the lowest setting with a lightweight rider on flat terrain. In everyday use, expect closer to 70 to 90 kilometers, which is still more than a week of riding for most commuters without needing to recharge in between. A battery lasts longer if you do not routinely run it completely empty and charge it indoors in winter. The stated range is always a test value, so expect somewhat less in practice.

MIK luggage carrier and eight gears

The bike has a MIK mounting system, the standard used by many Dutch brands. Bags, baskets, crates, and child seats with a MIK plate click on and off in one motion, and accessories are widely available. Eight gears provide more range than the seven you usually see, which is useful when starting from a standstill with luggage on the rear. The hydraulic disc brakes stop you with little hand pressure. Small differences like these matter more the more often you use the bike. That may sound like a detail, but it adds up on your daily route. A torque sensor determines how much assistance you receive based on your own pedaling power, so the motor responds gradually instead of shifting assistance in blocks.

Riding on 27.5 inches with a low step-through

Twenty-seven point five inches is an in-between size: more maneuverable than 28 inches and offering almost the same smooth rolling on longer stretches. Combined with the low step-through, it makes getting on and off easy. The front has suspension to absorb curbs and speed bumps; the rear is unsuspended, keeping the weight at thirty kilos. The 41-centimeter frame is compact within the recommended height range of approximately 1.70 to 2.00 meters.

Who is the JOBOBIKE Astra for?

For commuters who often ride in the dark or in heavy traffic and take visibility seriously. The maximum total weight is 120 kilos, which is on the low side for heavy luggage. The bike is designed for one person and made for paved roads. If you want to transport children or do large grocery runs, a longtail or cargo bike is what you need—not this model. Consider where you will store the bike, as that often matters more than the specifications. For commuting within built-up areas, this equipment is more than sufficient.
