Otherwise, you get the same features as with the other versions: a 42-centimetre step-through frame, 20-inch wheels, a 468-watt-hour battery, front suspension, mechanical disc brakes and an upright riding position.

Step-through frame and upright riding position

The frame is low and open, so you step straight through it instead of swinging your leg over it. Combined with an upright riding position and handlebars that are close to you, this gives you a clear view of the traffic and makes it easy to get on. For anyone who wants to spare their hips or back, that is the main argument—more important than the motor or battery. This model was designed with that in mind. Twenty-four kilos

Our specifications list this version at 24 kilos, while the blue and white versions are listed at 30. That six-kilo difference is considerable when lifting a folding bike into a car boot or pushing it over a doorstep. If that matters to you, this is the version to choose. Range of the JOBOBIKE Sam

The 36V, 13 amp-hour battery, with a total capacity of 468 watt-hours, has a stated range of around 60 kilometres. That is realistic for this capacity and weight. For trips to the shop, market or family, it will easily last you more than a week without charging. Charging takes four to six hours, so you can plug it in at the end of the day and it will be ready again the next morning. The stated range is always a test value, so in practice, expect somewhat less. Do not leave the battery outside in freezing temperatures; this can reduce its capacity over time.

Mechanical brakes and folding

The Sam uses mechanical disc brakes. In the rain and when descending, you need to squeeze harder, and braking is less precise than with hydraulic brakes, but they can be easily adjusted by any bike mechanic. The bike folds at the frame and handlebars, allowing it to fit in a car trunk. The front suspension absorbs curbs; the rear has no suspension, which keeps the weight down. Hydraulic brakes occasionally need bleeding, but otherwise require little maintenance. The lighting is permanently mounted on the bike and runs on the main battery.

For anyone looking for a bike that is easy to get on, can be stored compactly, and needs to remain as light as possible. The 42-centimeter frame suits riders approximately 1.50 to 1.95 meters tall, with a maximum total weight of 120 kilograms. What to consider: the mechanical brakes and 20-inch wheels with front suspension only mean that you will feel cobblestone streets more clearly than on a bike with larger wheels. Include where you will store the bike in your decision, as that often matters more than the specifications. For commuting within built-up areas, this equipment is more than sufficient.
