Buying a cargo bike on Black Friday: which one suits your family?

An electric cargo bike is a big purchase, which is why many families look at Black Friday. The discount is welcome, but the bike mainly has to suit your daily rides: to school, to daycare, groceries. This page shows the cargo bikes that are reduced right now. Currently these are VOGUE models such as the Carry 2, Carry 3, Carry 3 Bafang Max, Superior 3 Deluxe, Journey S and Avenger. The range changes. All models have a 250 watt motor that assists up to 25 km/h.

Two or three wheels

The Carry 2 is a two-wheeler. It rides like a normal bike with a long nose and is narrow: 65 centimetres according to the VOGUE manual, against 82 centimetres for the three-wheeled Carry 3. That makes it easier to get through a gate. Getting used to it usually takes a few rides.

The other models are three-wheelers. They stay upright at a traffic light and the children climb in without you balancing the bike. The trade-off is that you don't lean into a corner. VOGUE itself says to brake before the corner, because a three-wheeler can otherwise tip over. Measure your shed or gate before you choose.

Motor and gears

This is where the riding feel differs most. The Carry 2, Carry 3 and Superior Deluxe have an Ananda mid-drive motor, the Carry 3 Bafang Max a Bafang mid-drive and the Avenger an Ananda M100 with 110 Nm according to VOGUE. A mid-drive works through the gears, which you notice when pulling away with a full box and on a bridge. The Journey S has a Bafang rear hub motor, which pushes from the rear wheel and is enough for many families on flat routes. With hub gears you can shift while standing still; with a derailleur you have to keep pedalling.

How much can it carry?

According to the VOGUE manual, the Carry 2, Carry 3, Superior Deluxe and Avenger have two benches with four seat belts, for up to four young children between 9 and 36 kilos. On the three-wheelers everything together may weigh 300 kilos, including the bike itself. The Carry 2 may carry 250 kilos. Overloading voids the warranty according to VOGUE. Maintenance counts too: VOGUE asks for a first service after three months or 500 kilometres, then every six months or every 500 kilometres.

If it is mostly about groceries or a dog, the shape of the box matters more than the number of benches. Think about where the bike stays at night: a three-wheeler is wide and heavy, so a ground-floor spot saves a lot of effort. In winter a rain canopy is nice for the children. Whether one is included or sold separately is on the product page.

Take a test ride first, in one of our shops or at home, and ask which cargo bike is there. Bring the children if you can. With a full box a cargo bike steers and brakes differently, and you notice right away whether the motor pulls enough for your route. Cyber Monday follows on Monday 30 November, so if you doubt between two models you have a few days to try both. You can pay at once or in instalments with Klarna, in3 or SprayPay.
