Buying an electric bike on Black Friday: what to look for

You don't buy an e-bike every year. That's why many people wait for Black Friday. Fair enough, but a lower price says nothing about whether the bike suits you. This page shows the electric bikes that are reduced right now, currently from brands such as ENGWE, JOBOBIKE, Heybike, ADO, Hitway and Tomos. The range changes. What is on offer today can be sold out tomorrow, and more bikes are added around Black Friday. Every e-bike here has a 250 watt motor that assists up to 25 km/h. So they are regular electric bikes: no number plate and no helmet requirement in the Netherlands. You won't find speed pedelecs or bikes with a throttle here.

Which e-bike suits you?

Start with how you ride, not with the discount. If you cycle to work or school every day, a bike with 28 inch wheels rides the calmest, and most bikes here have those. If you live in a small home, take the bike in the car or keep it in a hallway, a compact e-bike with 20 inch wheels is handier.

Look at the step-through as well. Most reduced e-bikes have a low step-through. You get on without swinging your leg over the bar, which is nice with a full bag or if you are less flexible. A high frame often feels sturdier but is less easy to mount. Not sure about the size? Check the frame size and recommended rider height on the product page.

Black Friday e-bike deals: look beyond the price

Two bikes with the same discount can be very different. Watch three things.

The battery. The more watt-hours (Wh), the further you get on one charge. How many kilometres you really ride depends on your weight, the wind and the assistance level, so compare Wh rather than the promised range.

The motor. A mid-drive motor sits at the bottom bracket and works through the gears. It feels natural and helps when pulling away and on a bridge. A hub motor is simpler and enough for many people on flat city routes.

Brakes and suspension. Hydraulic disc brakes need less hand force. A suspension fork makes kerbs and rough roads more comfortable. What a bike has exactly is listed in the specifications on the product page.

Do you also ride in winter? Then check whether the battery is removable so you can charge it indoors, and whether the lights run on the battery. A cold battery delivers less, so expect fewer kilometres in winter than in summer. Warranty differs per brand and per bike; the product page says what applies.

Test ride, pay in instalments and insure

A discounted bike is only a good buy if it rides well. So take a test ride first, in one of our shops, including Amstelveen, Apeldoorn, Arnhem, Gouda, Heerenveen, Hellevoetsluis and Tilburg, or at home. Ask beforehand which e-bike is there, as not every model is at every location.

You can pay at once or spread the cost with Klarna, in3 or SprayPay, and insure the bike against theft and damage when you buy it. It gets busy around Black Friday. If you already know which e-bike you want, keep an eye on this page.
