Buying a Tomos e-bike: which EB suits you?

Most people know Tomos from mopeds. The brand's electric bikes are called EB, followed by a number, and that number does not always tell you how expensive or how well equipped a model is. That is why we list the differences here. They all have a 250 watt motor and assist up to 25 km/h, so they are regular electric bicycles without a number plate or driving licence. We do not sell Tomos mopeds or scooters. What to look at: how big the battery is, which gears are fitted and what kind of brakes. That is where the EB models differ most.

Battery: how far do you want to go?

The battery determines how much you can ride before you need to charge. The EB 10 has the smallest battery in this overview, 345 Wh. Fine for short trips in town. The EB 11, EB 12, EB 15 and EB 16 have a 626 Wh battery. The EB 14, EB 17, EB 18, EB 19, EB 20 and EB 22 come with 748 Wh, for anyone who rides a good distance every day or does not want to charge often. The EB 24 and EB 25 have a 500 Wh Bosch battery that you take out to charge indoors. How far you really get depends on the mode you choose, your weight and the wind.

Gears, belt or chain

This is where maintenance and ride feel differ a lot. The EB 12, EB 14 and EB 16 have a Shimano Nexus hub with 7 gears, the EB 15 a Nexus with 3. A hub gear sits enclosed in the rear wheel and also shifts when you are standing still, handy at a traffic light. The EB 17 and EB 24 have 9 gears with a derailleur, nice if you also ride outside town. The EB 19 and EB 22 run on a Gates belt instead of a chain. A belt does not rust and needs no lubrication. The EB 22 shifts steplessly with an Enviolo hub, without fixed gears. The EB 03 also has a belt and shifts automatically between two gears.

Mid-drive motor and Bosch

A mid-drive motor sits at the bottom bracket and responds to how hard you pedal. That feels natural when pulling away and on a bridge. The EB 17 and EB 18 have a mid-drive motor, the EB 20 a mid-drive motor from Bafang. According to Tomos, the EB 18, EB 19 and EB 20 have a torque sensor, which matches the assistance to your pedalling force. The EB 24 and EB 25 have a Bosch mid-drive motor. Bosch is a widely used system, so many bike mechanics know it. The EB 23 has an Ananda rear hub motor and is a simpler city bike with 7 gears.

Brakes and step-through

Most EB models have hydraulic disc brakes. They brake with little lever force, even when it is wet. The EB 10, EB 11, EB 12 and EB 15 have V-brakes, rim brakes that are simple to maintain but grip less in the rain. The EB 23 has mechanical disc brakes. Almost all models have a low step. The EB 03 comes with a low and a high step.

Test ride and ordering

In doubt between two EB models? Book a test ride in one of our stores or at your home, and ask in advance which model is available. You can also order online. The delivery time is shown on each product. Pay in one go or spread the payment with Klarna, in3 or SprayPay.
