This version of the Tomos EB 03 has a 54-centimeter high frame in matte black. That step-through choice is the main decision: a closed frame is stiffer and provides more direct handling, but you have to swing your leg over the frame. High frame or low step-through

A closed frame with a top tube is stiffer than a step-through frame, which you notice at higher speeds and when carrying luggage as a more direct steering feel. Where the EB 03 fits in the range

This is the entry-level model: 360 watt-hours compared with 626 or 748 for the rest of the range. What you do get are hydraulic disc brakes, which you will not find on the more expensive EB 11, 12, and 15. That makes the EB 03 interesting for people who take short rides but want good brakes. If you expect to cover longer daily distances, you will be better off with an EB 16 or higher because of the battery capacity.

Range of the Tomos EB 03

The 360-watt-hour battery is rated for up to 70 kilometers, measured in the lowest assist level on flat terrain. Realistically, expect forty to fifty kilometers. For a five-kilometer commute each way, it will last you an entire week. Charging takes four hours, which is short for this capacity and means you can top it up between rides without having to wait all evening before you can head out again. The stated range is always a test value, so expect somewhat less in practice. Do not leave the battery outside in freezing weather, as this will reduce its capacity over time.

Hydraulic brakes on the step-through model

The fact that the EB 03 has hydraulic disc brakes while the more expensive EB 11 and EB 12 use rim brakes is noteworthy. Hydraulic brakes require less hand force, offer finer modulation, and maintain their performance in the rain because they grip a separate disc. On a twenty-five-kilogram bike, this is comfortable rather than essential, but it makes a clear difference in wet weather and on a descent. Hydraulic brakes occasionally need bleeding, but otherwise require little maintenance. The lighting is permanently mounted on the bike and runs on the main battery.

Who is this model for?

For those who take short to medium-length rides, consider good brakes important, and prefer a stiffer frame to easy step-through access. The recommended rider height is approximately 1.70 to 2.05 metres, and the maximum total weight is 150 kilograms. Two points to consider: 360 watt-hours is limited for long distances, and matte paint is more prone to scratches and harder to touch up than gloss paint. Consider where you will store the bike, as that often matters more than the specifications. For commuting within built-up areas, this equipment is more than adequate.
