Difference from the standard Loop

The Pro has ten gears, while the standard Loop has eight, and a higher stated range: 160 versus 120 kilometers. Otherwise, they share the folding frame, the 720-watt-hour Samsung battery, and full suspension. More gears mean smaller increments, which is useful on a fat bike when riding into a headwind or over a bridge. If you only ride short distances on flat terrain, the standard version is more than sufficient. It may sound like a minor detail, but it adds up on your daily route.

Walk assist up to 6 km/h

There is a lever on the handlebars that propels the electric bike forward at up to 6 kilometers per hour while you walk beside it. This is permitted under Dutch regulations, because above that speed you have to pedal yourself. It is therefore not a throttle for riding away on the bike. With a 33-kilogram fat bike, this feature is more important in practice than it sounds: maneuvering it out of a full bike shed or pushing it up a driveway no longer takes any effort.

Range of the Loop Pro

The 48V, 15-amp-hour Samsung battery, with a total capacity of 720 watt-hours, has a stated range of up to 160 kilometers. That is the upper end of what a fat bike can achieve and applies to economical riding on flat terrain. Realistically, expect eighty to one hundred kilometers, which is still plenty. The battery is removable, so you can charge it indoors while the bike is in the shed or folded up in a storage room. A battery lasts longer if you do not routinely run it completely flat and charge it indoors during winter. The stated range is always a test value, so expect somewhat less in practice.

Folding with full suspension

A folding hinge and a suspended rear swingarm in the same frame are technically challenging because both introduce potential weak points. Mapfour solves this with a sturdier frame, as reflected in its 33-kilogram weight. So it can fold, but carrying it is another matter: this is a bike you slide into a car trunk or store more compactly in a shed. The low step-through design makes getting on and off easy, meanwhile. The brake pads and discs use standard sizes, so they can be replaced at any service point. Hydraulic brakes need occasional bleeding, but otherwise require little maintenance.

Who is the Mapfour Loop Pro for?

For riders who want a fat bike with plenty of range and comfort, and who use the folding mechanism to store the bike somewhere. The maximum total weight is 150 kilos, leaving ample capacity for luggage. What to keep in mind: 33 kilos is too much to lift every day. If you are looking for something lightweight for the train, this is the wrong model and you would be better off with a proper folding bike. Anyone who rides it daily will notice these trade-offs sooner than someone who only takes an occasional ride. Consider where you will store the bike, as that often matters more than the specifications.
