Those who choose the OUXI GT-20 in grey are choosing the more understated of the two versions. Black makes the frame look solid and dark, while grey breaks up the shape and makes the wide tires stand out more. Under the paint, it is exactly the same bike: a 250W motor, 48V battery, hydraulic brakes, and front and rear suspension. The only difference is how it looks. We also keep getting the same three questions about this model: whether it is legal, how far it can go, and whether two people can ride it. We address them here.

Is the grey OUXI GT-20 legal on public roads?

Yes. The motor is 250W, assistance cuts out at 25 kilometres per hour, and there is no throttle for riding off without pedalling. In the Netherlands, this means the bike falls under the standard electric bicycle category. No registration, driving licence, or helmet is required. Its rugged styling does not change that. If you have a bike like this modified to go faster, that does change things: it then falls into a different category, and you lose your warranty. We only supply the standard version.

Range and charging time

With the 48V 15Ah battery, you can travel around 65 kilometres. That figure applies to an average assistance setting on flat terrain without extra luggage. In the highest setting or with someone riding on the back, the range is lower. A full charge takes about four hours, so overnight is more than enough. For a daily round trip of around ten kilometres, you will need to charge it twice a week. You can remove the battery to charge it indoors if your bike is kept outside or in a shed.

Brakes, suspension, and the 20-inch tires

Hydraulic disc brakes front and rear are a must at this weight. The GT-20 gray weighs 43 kilos, which calls for brakes that don't cost you your whole hand. It has suspension front and rear. Combined with the 20x4.0 tires, the bike smooths out most rough roads: tram tracks, speed bumps, and loose paving tiles. Seven gears are more than enough for flat terrain in the Netherlands. The display shows your speed and battery level, and you start it with an NFC card instead of a key. It also has walk assistance, which propels the bike at up to 6 kilometers per hour while you walk beside it. Handy when maneuvering in a crowded bike storage area or going up a driveway.

Two people on the GT-20 gray

Two people are allowed, and the bike has a long seat and footrests for that purpose. That explains why this model is often ridden to schools and sports clubs. Keep in mind that your range becomes noticeably shorter with a passenger and that steering feels heavier at low speeds. For short trips together, this is not a problem. If you often ride long distances with two people, a model with a larger battery is the wiser choice. Footrests are included as standard, so you don't need to order anything extra to take someone along.

Who is the GT-20 gray for?

Riders between approximately 1.50 and 1.95 meters tall will fit this frame well. The step-through height is high, so you need to swing your leg over it. If that is difficult, a fatbike with a low step-through is more comfortable. The 43-kilo weight is the second point to consider: carrying it up stairs is not an option, so you'll want storage on the ground floor.
