One hundred newton-metres of torque

You notice torque when accelerating and climbing, not at top speed. One hundred newton-metres is exceptionally high for a bicycle: you feel it immediately when pulling away from a traffic light and on a bridge or dike. The motor is mounted at the bottom bracket and transfers its power through the gears, making pedalling itself easier. Combined with a Nexus hub, this provides a drivetrain that can handle a lot without becoming unsettled. The bike has built-in GPS tracking, so you can find it on a map.

Full suspension with real damping

Up front is a Zoom fork with 100 millimetres of travel, and at the rear a DNM shock with 60 millimetres. These are components from the mountain-bike world, not simple springs. Range of the Mapfour Roam

The 36 V, 20 ampere-hour LG battery, with a total capacity of 720 watt-hours, is rated for up to 150 kilometres. That figure applies to economical riding on flat terrain; with a 100-newton-metre motor at its highest setting, you will get considerably less. Realistically, expect eighty to one hundred kilometres. LG cells come from a manufacturer whose products you also find in tools and cars, which makes a difference to service life over the years. A battery lasts longer if you do not routinely run it completely flat and charge it indoors during winter. The stated range is always a test value, so expect somewhat less in practice.

180-millimeter brakes

The Tektro disc brakes have 180-millimeter rotors front and rear. Larger rotors provide more braking power with the same lever pressure and dissipate heat more effectively on a long descent. On a bike that reaches speed smoothly with 100 newton-meters of torque, that is not excessive but exactly what you would expect. The high-step frame is stiffer than a step-through model, which contributes to a composed steering feel with this level of motor power. The lights are permanently mounted on the bike and run on the main battery. When the bike is delivered, briefly check the brake lever reach; you can adjust it in a few seconds.

Who is the Mapfour Roam for?

For riders who want plenty of torque and do not stick to flat asphalt. The step-over height is high, so you swing your leg over the frame. If you want a step-through, take a look at the Roam ST with the same drive system. If you only ride short distances through a busy city center, this model is more heavily equipped than you need, and a regular city bike will be more practical. Anyone who rides it every day will notice these choices sooner than someone who only takes an occasional ride. Consider where you will store the bike, as that often matters more than the specifications.
