Small electric bike: compact and easy to take along

You usually buy a small electric bike because space is tight. A narrow hallway, a storage room in an apartment block, the boot of your car or the train. Sometimes also because you have to carry the bike up stairs. This page shows e-bikes with small wheels that, according to our product data, weigh 25 kg at most, from brands including Fiido, ADO, ENGWE, DYU, Heybike, JOBOBIKE, BOHLT, SKYJET, RKS and Puch. They are also called mini e-bikes or compact e-bikes. Almost all of them have a 250 watt motor that assists up to 25 km/h. The ENGWE T14 is an exception: according to our product data it is limited to 15 km/h. Heavier folding bikes with wide fatbike tyres can be found under electric folding bikes.

14, 16 or 20 inch: how small does it need to be?

The smaller the wheels, the smaller the bike when folded or in the hallway. Bikes with 14 inch wheels, such as the Fiido D3 Pro and the DYU D3S, are the smallest. They take up the least space when folded. The trade-off is that they ride less smoothly on poor roads and the battery is small. The Fiido D3 Pro has 281 Wh.

With 16 inch wheels, such as the ENGWE Zip and the SKYJET 1S, you are in between. If you mainly want to ride comfortably and the bike does not need to be tiny, choose 20 inch. Think of the ADO Air 20S, the Fiido D11 and the Fiido X, or the ADO Air One and the Heybike Compact City. They ride the most smoothly of the three sizes. Small wheels react faster to steering. Handy in town, but it takes a few rides to get used to.

How light is a small e-bike?

According to our product data the lightest model here is the DYU SP1 at 14 kg, followed by the ADO Air Carbon at 16 kg. Many models are between 17 and 20 kg. Light and small usually comes with a smaller battery. The DYU SP1 has 120 Wh, while the JOBOBIKE Ace Pro at 24 kg has a 540 Wh battery. If you mainly make short trips, to the station or the supermarket, a small battery is no problem. If you ride further every day, choose a model with more watt-hours and accept a few extra kilos.

Look at the step-in too. According to our product data the Fiido D3 Pro, the DYU D3S, the ADO Air Carbon, the Fiido D11, the ADO Air One and the Heybike Compact City have a low step-in. That is nice if you are shorter or get on and off often.

Buying a small e-bike: folding, size and test ride

Not every small e-bike folds the same way. On some only the handlebar folds down, on others the frame folds in half. Check on the product page how the bike folds and what its folded dimensions are, and measure your car boot or storage space before you order. Also check the suitable rider height, because with small wheels it varies a lot between models.

Take a test ride first in one of our shops, including Amstelveen, Apeldoorn, Arnhem, Gouda, Heerenveen, Hellevoetsluis and Tilburg, or at home. You can pay in one go or spread the cost with Klarna, in3 or SprayPay, and you can insure the bike against theft and damage straight away when you buy it.
